RB Leipzig have had a strong start to the new season, defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0. Baku scored in the 26th minute to give his team the lead. Baku, who was previously left out of the German national team squad, hopes to regain his place with a strong performance now that Klopp has taken over as coach.
Speaking about his previous exclusion from the German national team, Baku said, "Of course I was disappointed, really. I was on vacation at the time, and also preparing for the new season. We've now had seven weeks of intensive training. If we can get off to a good start, we'll naturally come back into the spotlight."
When asked if he was keeping in touch with Klopp, Baku laughed and said, "I have his number, I can say that. If he calls me, I know it's him. But like I said, I have to perform. Without performance, everything will be difficult."
Klopp knew Baku very well during his time as Red Bull's global football director. Now that he's the German national team coach, Baku's chances of returning to the national team hinge on his performances going forward.
